Forum: GratefulDead Subject: ever been busted by the "donation" police?

all of these stories lately have been reminding of different things that happened in the lot before shows. One thing that annoyed me was the "donation cops". It started at shoreline one year and spread everywhere I went after that. The first time scared the shi*t out of me. Shoreline was enforcing a strict open container law and I was hiding my beer. All of a sudden two clean cut, possible under cover cops tap me on the shoulder and say, "you're under arrest for...having too much fun" they whip out a bunch of stickers and ask for a donation to something.

That did happen to me, but not at a Dead show. It was on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. And, yes, I immediately cited that particular line from that particular song.

No, but one year we got to a Nassau spring show way early in the morning - before the parking lot folks were taking money for parking and/or set up. My buddy had an orange events type fest for something or another, so we stood out and took parking money from folks as they came in for about an hour and a half (still all pre-noon day of first show) and then went and bought two kegs of beer (back in those days we always had a tap with us) and gave away free beer to whoever wanted it.

I remember the "Donation Police". Ususally the stickers they had said something like "In Search Of the Eternal Buzz" or something to that effect.
Funny thing - last fall at the Martinsville VA Nascar race we were busted by the "Police" and asked for a donation and given a "Are we having fun yet?" sticker.
From Dead lots to Nascar...
